Eric Renaghan is the Director of Sport Science at the University of Miami and utilizes thermography in various disciplines such as baseball and American football. Additionally, he has extensive experience in the NHL and is about to complete his doctorate in applied physiology. It’s interesting to learn about his experience using thermography in the sports field.

Additionally, we highlight a truly interesting excerpt from the interview. Eric discusses the various ways they use thermography in sports science and how they utilize it.

  1. Firstly, they use it reactively to track athletes’ recovery, especially in the baseball pitching staff, monitoring temperature changes in surfaces or structures after throwing sessions. This helps tailor interventions for regeneration and workload management.
  2. Secondly, they employ thermography proactively to anticipate problems, aiding in addressing performance deterioration or changes in movement strategy that may not be immediately visible.
  3. Additionally, they highlight its role in concussion research, where it helps differentiate between symptoms of traumatic brain injury and cervical injury, guiding intervention and treatment strategies for athletes with concussions.
