Thermography is an increasingly used tool in fields such as sports, healthcare, and research. Having good analysis software is just as important as choosing the right thermal camera. At ThermoHuman, we have designed a highly versatile system that works with a wide variety of thermal cameras—but not all cameras operate the same way or offer the same benefits.

One of the most frequently asked questions from our users is which cameras are compatible with our software and which ones allow for direct connection (Plug & Play). That’s why in this article we explain in detail the two ways to work with thermal images in ThermoHuman, what "Plug & Play" really means, and we provide a clear, up-to-date list of compatible and non-compatible cameras.

Two ways to work with thermal images in ThermoHuman

Our software offers two main methods for uploading thermal images:

1. Plug & Play method: Direct connection and real-time capture

This is the fastest and most automated method. The Plug & Play function allows the thermal camera to connect directly to a computer via USB cable, enabling real-time image capture directly from the ThermoHuman software.

What does “Plug & Play” mean in ThermoHuman?

Literally, “plug and play” means “connect and use”—and that’s exactly what this feature allows. Once the user connects the camera to the computer and logs into their ThermoHuman account, they can immediately begin a thermographic evaluation, without manually importing or processing images..

Advantages of Plug & Play

  • Direct image capture from within the software.
  • Real-time analysis.
  • Automated segmentation and report generation.
  • Reduced human error in file handling.
  • Speed: a report can be ready in under 30 seconds (e.g., when analyzing only the legs).

Technical Requirements

To use the Plug & Play function, you need:

  • A computer with Windows operating system.
  • An active internet connection.
  • USB-C to USB-C or USB-C to USB-A cable, depending on the camera and computer.
  • Installation of the ThermoHuman driver, available in the “Help” menu of the software.
  • Depending on the camera model:
    • FLIR: Connects via USB directly to the computer. No active internet connection is required, as communication between the camera and PC is local (offline).
    • HikMicro: Uses the local WiFi network to connect to the software, so an active internet connection is required. Both the camera and the computer must be connected to the same local network (via WiFi or LAN).

The first time you use the camera, you must install a driver to enable Plug & Play. (This is only needed once.) The correct driver must be installed according to the camera used:

  • FLIR: Requires the ThCamCtrl_FLIR driver.
  • HikMicro: Requires the ThCamCtrl_HikMicro driver.

Not sure which driver to install?

Contact our technical support team, and they’ll guide you to the correct file based on your OS and camera model.

Once these requirements are met, the software automatically detects the camera and allows the evaluation to begin. You just need to select the desired protocol and either click the camera icon or press the space bar to capture the thermal image. The system automatically segments the body regions and generates a complete report in seconds. Learn more about “Plug & Play” in this article or in this video.

2. Manual Upload Method: Importing Images from the Computer

The second method involves capturing thermal images with the camera, transferring them to the computer, and then manually uploading them into the ThermoHuman software. This process includes an intermediate step: exporting the images from the camera to the PC, and then importing them into the software.

How does it work?

  • Capture with the camera (not directly connected to the software).
  • Transfer to the PC via USB, SD card, or manufacturer’s software.
  • From ThermoHuman, access the analysis module and upload the desired images.

Once imported, ThermoHuman allows full thermographic analysis with the same quality and precision as Plug & Play.

Advantages of Manual Upload

  • Compatible with more cameras and brands.
  • Useful for users with non-Plug & Play compatible cameras.
  • No need for direct connection or driver installation.
  • A good option when internet access is unavailable.

What’s the difference from Plug & Play?

While both methods allow full analysis, the manual method takes more time and steps. The main difference is automation: Plug & Play removes the need to export and import images, streamlining the process.

3. Cameras Compatible with ThermoHuman Software

Below is a clear list of cameras that can be used with our software through at least manual upload. That is, images captured with these cameras can be uploaded and analyzed in ThermoHuman—even if not all support Plug & Play.

Cameras Compatible with Plug & Play

These cameras support direct connection and capture from within the software:

Brand and Compatible Models:

  • FLIR: All Ex/Exx and Txxx series
  • HikMicro: M31T

These are the most recommended cameras if you're considering purchasing new equipment, as they fully support the software’s capabilities.

Cameras Compatible with ThermoHuman (Manual Upload)

These cameras support importing thermal images for analysis in ThermoHuman:

  • FLIR: T1020, DJI, A65, T640, T620, T560-EST, T840, T540-EST, T540, E85, A35, T530, T510sp, T440, T430sc, T420bx, T410sp, T335, E76, E75, E60bx, E54-EST, E8, A300, E53, E50, ONE Pro, E6, C5, E86-EST, T420, T460, T530sc, T360, T860, E5, C5sc, SC5000, T250, E4, E60, x8400sc, SC640

We strive to make our software compatible with as many cameras as possible. If you're unsure about a specific model, please contact us.

4. ThermoHuman Software Functionality Compatibility

ThermoHuman offers various types of thermal analysis, each with specific camera requirements based on image quality and technical features. Compatibility per functionality is as follows:

1. Asymmetries

  • Compatibility: All thermal cameras compatible with ThermoHuman.
  • Minimum Requirement: Must produce radiometric images (with per-pixel temperature data), regardless of resolution.
  • Note: This is the most flexible functionality, as it relies on comparing relative areas within the same image.

2. Return To Play (RTP)

  • Compatibility: All cameras with resolution ≥ 320x240 pixels.
  • Not Recommended: Low-resolution cameras (e.g., FLIR One Pro at 160x120 pixels).
  • Justification: Higher resolution ensures enough detail in localized areas to accurately track injuries and tissue recovery.

3. Fatigue

  • Compatibility: Cameras with high thermal stability, recommended from FLIR E54 series and up (e.g., T530, T540).
  • Not Recommended: Basic models or cameras with less stable sensors, which can introduce thermal noise and distort variation metrics.
  • Justification: This functionality requires very high-quality thermal data to detect subtle temperature changes in large body regions.

5. Cameras NOT Compatible with ThermoHuman

These cameras cannot be used with ThermoHuman, either via direct connection or manual upload. While some belong to well-known brands, these specific models are not compatible with our system.

Important: Just because a camera is from a compatible brand does not mean all of its models are supported. If you’re unsure, please contact us to confirm compatibility.
