Thermal cameras have a fairly long lifespan (over 8 years), and technologically, there are no major advances, so they do not become obsolete quickly (for example, we continue to use the cameras we bought in 2009 with the same 320×240 resolution that is sold today). Keywords: service life, durability, time

Does the camera's SD card have to be special or different?

No, any SD or microSD card will work. Keywords: memory card, storage

I'm having trouble reading the SD card, but it's not full.

First, check that the card lock is not activated. If everything is correct, it may be that the card is not reading the images even though it's not full. We recommend deleting some images or formatting the card directly. It also often happens that SD cards with high capacity (>16Gb) and high reading speed (>50MB/s) can cause problems. In other words, it is better to use cards with 4 or 8Gb capacity and basic characteristics. Keywords: memory card, storage

Yes, most cameras are compatible with a tripod for added convenience. Keywords: support, camera fixed, comfort

Can I take the images without a tripod?

We recommend taking images with a tripod, especially when using the plug and play system (connecting the camera to the computer). However, it is true that if you are going to take several images of the upper and lower part of the body, in many occasions it may be faster to take the images with the camera in your hand. Remember that in these cases it is very important to square the image, place the camera in the correct orientation and at the correct height (legs at knee height and torso at chest height). Keywords: support, anchorage, comfort

Can I use an Apple computer for data collection?

Yes, our software is fully compatible. The only thing you should know with Mac is that, for the moment, you won't be able to use the automatic controller (the "plug and play" function). Other than that, it works like any other operating system. Keywords: version, computer, PC

When is the best time to take the photos?

If we're talking about injury prevention, we recommend taking at least one photo per week the day after or two days after engaging in intense physical activity, such as a match or competition. This aims to assess how the body has assimilated the workload from the previous day or days during the night. If we're discussing injury monitoring, the photo should be taken before any treatment is administered to the patient, and it will be up to the operator to decide how often they want to monitor the patient based on the injury. Keywords: moment, time, ideal

Can they be taken with clothing on?

No, we need the camera to be able to detect the temperature of the skin, so we need to remove the clothing to take the photo. Keywords: thermographic data, pictures, photos

How many photos should I take per week?

If we're talking about injury prevention, we recommend taking at least one photo per week the day after or two days after engaging in intense physical activity, such as a match or competition. If we're discussing injury monitoring, the photo should be taken before any treatment is administered to the patient, and it will be up to the operator to decide how often they want to monitor the patient based on the injury. Keywords: images, ideal, frequency

How long does it take to collect the data?

Around 30 seconds per person, connecting the camera to the computer while taking the photo.

Does the camera on my phone work or is it valid?

If you are referring to the visible camera of your mobile phone, the answer is no: ThermoHuman only analyzes thermal photos. If, on the other hand, you are referring to thermal photos taken with a cell phone that has a thermal camera (such as CAT S60 or CAT S62 Pro) or that uses a FLIR ONE Pro (or FLIR ONE Edge Pro), these can be analyzed by ThermoHuman even though their resolution (160x120) is very low, and we recommend using images of at least 320x240 pixels. Keywords: camera, phone, mobile

Why is the thermographic photo analyzed?

Because it contains radiometric data (temperature data). Remember that a thermogram has colors and temperature data that are not visible, and those are what we analyze with ThermoHuman.

What is the radiometric data contained in the thermography image?

They are unchangeable data of the temperature of each pixel, which is why the ThermoHuman software and the quantitative method are not affected by the scale and its variations.

Does the ambient temperature influence it?

There are many factors that influence skin temperature (you can see this review published by us in 2015: (https://thermohuman.com/2020/05/08/thermography-and-influence-factors) and among them, ambient temperature is one of the most relevant. However, both this factor and many others have an equal influence on all regions, especially on contralateral ones: that is, they do not affect asymmetries. Nevertheless, both we and the protocols recommend taking data in controlled environments (from 18°C to 25°C) and conducting an acclimatization period of at least 10 minutes.

At what distance should I place the camera?

It depends on the camera you use and the protocol being analyzed. We recommend a camera with 42º lenses. With this type of lens, generic protocols (trunk or legs, anterior and/or posterior) require about 2.5 meters of distance. With lower lenses (for example, 24º), that distance can increase up to 4 meters. In specific protocols such as hands, chest, knees, or feet, the distance varies but is usually between 50cm and 1 meter (with 42º lenses). Also, remember that the distance depends on the height of the person: for example, if you are evaluating someone who is 1.50m tall, the distance will be shorter, and if they are 2.10m tall, the distance will be greater. This is because the logic is to frame the subject well, not to always take the image at the same distance.

My photos are automatically downloaded during data acquisition with direct connection (plug & play), how can I deactivate it?

Currently it is not possible to disable automatic downloading of images when the photo is taken with the camera connected, but if you accidentally close the browser tab or press the Back button or some unexpected error occurs, you will lose all the images added to the session. When the camera is connected to the PC it does not store images on the internal SD card, so we make sure that there is always a backup saved on the PC by downloading it. If this bothers you, it is probably because your browser has enabled the option to ask at each download where to store the file. In that case, the browser will do that every time a download is triggered, there is nothing we can do about it. You can configure your browser to skip this message every time a file is downloaded, so that the download does not interrupt your workflow. Go to your browser settings and uncheck the option to prompt on download. In Chrome it's in chrome://settings/downloads and in Firefox it's in about:preferences

Can I take images and analyze them later?

Yes. You just need to import the images into the software by connecting the camera or memory card to the computer. In the software, you can drag the image into the corresponding protocol or search for it from your computer's files. There is no issue with the date of image capture (meaning, you can analyze images taken an hour ago, a week ago, or even months ago).

How many scientific papers on thermography are there that you have not published?

We are a reference in the field of human thermography but there are many research groups that have published their work. In fact, we like to publish infographics about studies that are not from our group. Keywords: number of publications, articles, science

What scientific evidence does Thermohuman rely on?

ThermoHuman has more than 60 scientific articles published by members of the team and can be consulted in the resources section of the web page. In addition, the software itself has been validated in this scientific article (link: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32888554/) and several articles in which the software has been used as an analysis tool (link: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=ThermoHuman). Keywords: number of publications, articles, science

Do all lesions increase skin temperature?

Not all lesions increase skin temperature detectable by thermography. While some lesions may cause an obvious increase in localized temperature in the affected area, others may have no detectable thermal changes or may even reduce skin temperature, depending on factors such as the depth of the lesion, the degree of inflammation and the physiological response of the body. For example, nerve-type and muscle discontinuity decrease skin temperature. The interpretation of thermographic images must consider the clinical context and other complementary tests to obtain an accurate diagnosis. You have more information in this link: https://thermohuman.com/2023/03/01/injury-follow-up-from-a-thermographic-perspective. Keywords: interpretation, temperature variation
