How Orlando Pride applies thermography: objective assessment and load management with Erin Angelini

1. What was the first thing that caught your attention about the technology?

We were initially impressed by how user-friendly the platform was and how cleanly the data could be organized and interpreted. As we gained more experience with the technology, we found value in being able to identify abnormal data points and use the information to investigate trends in greater detail.

2. How does ThermoHuman help you in your workflow? What extra value does it bring?

ThermoHuman is one of the first objective assessments we complete after a game, alongside our wellness questionnaires. It provides an efficient screening tool to help identify athletes who may require additional follow-up, a medical evaluation, or further assessment of strength and performance metrics relative to their individual baseline.

3. How do you communicate the information provided by the software to the players?

Athletes who opt in to this technology understand the value and how we use it as a preliminary screen to help guide their week; we are working toward integrating ThermoHuman data into our athlete-facing platform so they can view it alongside their other performance and wellness information. We individually meet with the players who flag on the system to identify cause and examine further.

4. Have you found any correlation with other technologies or with players’ wellness questionnaire responses?

We have observed correlations between reported fatigue levels on our wellness survey and overall TPI values. We have also identified instances where areas of concern on thermal imaging preceded the development or persistence of symptoms by one to two weeks, which has provided additional context when monitoring the athlete.

5. How do you integrate ThermoHuman into your routine?

We typically complete the assessment on the first day the athletes return to the building following a game, which is generally MD+2. This is followed throughout the week with other monitoring tests you would see in a performance setting: CMJ, nordics, groin squeezes. We put all of this information together with subjective information from the athlete to get a holistic picture.

6. Can you describe a particular case where the technology has helped you?

ThermoHuman has been particularly useful during return-to-play, tracking trends in body heat fluctuations after varying loads in each phase. It also allows us to look beyond the athlete’s primary area of pain and identify other regions that may be experiencing increased load or fatigue as compensation. Additionally, for players that don't frequently recieve treatment, this allows us to touch base with them if there are any abnormalities for proactive treatment and care.
